Belted Galloways

Belted Galloways, also known as Oreo cows, are an old heritage breed originating from the Galloway region of Scotland. They are a strain of the Galloway breed thought to be a result of breeding the Galloway breed to the Dutch Belted Lakenvelder breed. They are able to thrive on lower-quality pastures and effectively turn low-grade forage into top-grade meat. They are naturally polled (born with no horns), and have a double coat which helps shed rain and keeps them warm in all weather.

Belted Galloways typically have a quiet and easy to manage temperament. They most commonly are black with a white belt, but they also can be red or dun coloured with a white belt. They are a slower growing cattle breed with a good quality of meat. The meat has good marbling, is tender, very lean, and flavourful. As a result of coming from harsher environments, they are more disease resistant than many other breeds.

Belted Galloways are a smaller beef breed. We aim to raise our animals to a 550-600 lb hanging weight. Therefore, our quarters are smaller than one from an Angus, Charolais, etc. and will be approximately 125-150 lbs.
